THE BRIDGE OF SIGHS
(PONTE DEI SOSPIRI)
According to romantic literature, the Bridge of Sighs comes its name in Eighteenth Century, from the fact that the prisoners sighed, passing over here to go from the courts of law of the Doge’s Palace to the prisons and watching the beautiful view over the Lagoon and the Saint George Isle. They knew that they wouldn’t see quickly the light of the Sun.
Nowadays it seems a sentimental noun and therefore it is the perfect background for a gondola ride of persons in love.
The bridge is made by white stone of Istria and was built between the Sixteenth and Seventeenth Century, ordered by Doge Marino Grimani. The symbol of the Grimanis is placed in the center of the façade, surmounted by a relief representing the Justice.
