THE SAINT MARY OF THE FRIARS BASILICA
(BASILICA DI SANTA MARIA GLORIOSA DEI FRARI)
The Saint Mary of the Friars Basilica is the most important Venice’s church. The construction started during the Thirteenth Century, but it was consecrated only in 1492. This monument is devoted to Mary’s Assumption and is located in the heart of San Polo, one of the six quarters (each of them named “sestiere”) in which the city was divided.
The architectonical style of this imposing church is gothic-cistercian and is made by bricks. Into the church there is the only one Presbyterian enclosure left in Venice. The interior has three naves with some chapels.
This church keeps a large number of masterpieces.
For example the high altar is surmounted by “The Assumption” by Tiziano, but you can also admire works by Bellini and Bartolomeo Bon.
Into this church are kept the spoil of many important men, such as Canova and Tiziano. Both of these sepulchral monuments were projected and realized just by Canova.
